Over 280 people were present at the Thanet Archive Film Screening Weekend at The Community Pharmacy Gallery in Margate’s Old Town.

An eager queue formed for the Tupp’ny Rush at the 2pm Opening Screening. Over 180 mainly local visitors attended the Saturday screenings, where Whitstable film archivist, Tony Blake, kindly gave an additional Matinee presentation of his Evening Screening to the capacity crowd.

The atmosphere was both happy and sad as the audience, for the most part senior citizens, discussed common memories over free tea and biscuits. A dozen faces

Visitors’ Quotes
returned the next day, with friends and family. One visitor brought in an old metal 16mm film canister, bought at a boot fair, with no idea of its content. Once projected, it proved to be silent footage of a 1920’s alpine military skiing regatta, in excellent condition.

Another visitor brought in a DVD of original photo stills of Thanet District Council’s insurance claim for the storm damage caused to Margate Seafront and Pier from 1953 and 1971.

Of the estimated total visitors over the weekend, approximately 250 were senior citizens, and about 20 were between the ages of 20 and 60 years;  5 teenagers accompanied their parents/grandparents and 5 younger children attended, whose boredom was only relieved by the abundance of jammy dodgers.

My family has run a business ion Thanet for 35 years. Part of which was selling postcards of the south of England. The film brought back memories of working on the seafront as a boy in the early ‘60s. We used to sell 3,000,000 postcards a year then!! Keith Eliott
